Volunteer

For over a decade, The Hera Society has been helping adolescent girls at risk become strong, healthy women. What started in 1994 as a short-term project has blossomed into an organization that has made - and continues to make - meaningful and positive changes in the lives of adolescent girls and their families. We provide the necessary services and supports on an individual basis, increasing each girl's chance of success.

As an independent, non-profit charitable organization, The Hera Society relies on the dedication and passion of volunteers. Whether it's in the classroom or in the community, volunteers make meaningful, positive contributions to the lives of our clients every day, helping them meet their potential.

Volunteering at the Hera Society

Without the effort of volunteers, The Hera Society would not be able to provide the level of support our clients require. But volunteering doesn't only benefit the girls - it can have a profound effect on the volunteers themselves.

"All the accolades, awards and monetary bonuses of my career cannot match the personal satisfaction I have achieved in my volunteer position as a classroom assistant at The Hera Society.

"It took doing 'something for free' to truly understand the meaning of R.O.I. (return on investment). The stakeholders that I am now accountable to are young women who have both challenges and opportunities for very productive and constructive adult lives. The impact of my contribution cannot be measured by boardroom standards, but it is more tangible than any formula that I have ever worked with before."

How many volunteers does the Hera society have?

Our core group of volunteers may be small but the difference they make in the lives of our clients is significant. In 2005, 16 volunteers contributed close to 300 hours of their time to The Hera Society.

What do volunteers do?

Volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization and come from all walks of life, but they all have one thing in common: they want to make a difference in the lives of adolescent girls. Volunteers are needed in various capacities:

  • Act as a mentor for our clients, adolescent girls at risk.
  • Offer assistance in the classroom
  • Provide help with our experiential learning program
  • Work with a fundraising committee
  • Guide the organization as a volunteer director

How do I get involved?

A vital part of our programming is that all our clients feel safe and comfortable in the environments we provide. As such, we require every volunteer successfully complete the following before being placed in a position with The Hera Society. A volunteer applicant must:

  • Review the Volunteer Information Package
  • Complete an application form
  • Supply three references
  • Attend a pre-screening interview
  • Successfully complete a police check
  • Successfully complete an Alberta Children's Services Intervention Record Check
  • Attend all appropriate training sessions
