Hera evolved from a short-term pilot project conducted by Enviros Wilderness School Association in January 1993. The project targeted adolescent girls who were experiencing challenges in school, at home, and in their community. The project was aimed at adolescent girls and their families and included group, individual and family counseling as well as life skill training and in home support services. Results from that project indicated a need for long term programming to address the complex needs of adolescent girls experiencing social, academic and emotional difficulties.
In response to this need, in 1994, under the umbrella of Enviros Wilderness School Association, Hera was created in partnership with the Calgary Board of Education and The Calgary Police Service. On March 31, 2001 The Hera Society was incorporated as an independent charitable organization.
Hera is a unique and innovative organization. Services are integrated and delivered by a multidisciplinary team of professionals. Hera's holistic approach is made up of Experiential Learning (group instruction and one to one youth work), In-Home Family Support, Mentoring, and Therapy (individual, group and family), in order to address the complex needs of adolescent girls. A unique educational program continues to be offered in partnership with The Calgary Board of Education.
Through an integrated service delivery approach, Hera has been able to make meaningful and positive differences in the lives of many adolescent girls. In 2004, the Board of Directors of Hera engaged in a comprehensive planning process for the years 2004-2007. A new Strategic Plan was developed in early 2006 and will guide the organization through 2009. Hera will continue to respond to the needs of adolescent girls, while at the same time continuing to assess emerging needs in order to plan for the future.
