Criteria

Hera is a voluntary program. We expect all girls - and their families - to have a desire to make positive changes in their lives with our help and support. Hera offers two streams of service, one of which includes a unique educational program. Girls who will be considered for the program:

  • demonstrate a motivation to change
  • willingly engage in all program activities
  • are identified as being "at risk" (see Risk Factors)
  • follow Hera policies with respect to safety, appropriate dress, smoking, drugs / alcohol use, etc.

Girls who wish to access the Hera classroom must also:

  • have an Alberta Learning (DSM) code identifying a "severe" level of challenge.
  • have the intellectual capacity to succeed in an integrated occupational program.

Risk Factors

Often girls exhibit warning signs that may help you determine if entrance into Hera is right for them. Please visit the Risk Factors section of this website to learn more.

Please note: Girls who are regularly involved in prostitution and / or whose substance abuse remains at high levels are not eligible for the program.

Transition / Discharge Criteria

Because Hera is a voluntary program, a girl and / or her family may choose to terminate service at any time. Hera will discharge a client if the girl or her family fail to meet entrance criteria on a consistent basis.

When a girl demonstrates the ability to interact effectively in the classroom, displays the commitment to make healthy choices (e.g. has minimized / eliminated her use of drugs and alcohol), displays increased life skills and expresses confidence in her ability to cope with the life challenges she faces, Hera will recommend transition into a regular classroom or work placement.
